Librarian of the Year 2006

On behalf of the National Executive of LIASA and Sabinet Online, we are very pleased and proud to announce that the LIASA/Sabinet Librarian of the Year for 2006 is Fatima Darries.

The Western Cape Branch nominated Fatima. She receives an award of R25 000 to be used for any educational purpose (further studies, visits to relevant institutions locally or internationally, attending relevant conferences). The Librarian of the Year is seen to be a role model to the rest of the Library and Information community and a person whose contributions make a lasting impact on the sector.

The motivation from the Western Cape branch reads (in part):

"In addition to fulfilling all the criteria for this prestigious award, Ms Darries has been very actively involved in LIASA ... She demonstrates excellence in promoting library and information services and the Association through her work at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology and LIASA activities. Her leadership is demonstrated by the various initiatives such as the establishment of the WCHELIG (Western Cape Higher Education Libraries Interest Group) and the successful Colloquiums hosted by this interest group. An exceptional achievement was her selection to attend the HERS-SA Academy as one of four Cape Technikon women. In 2005, Fatima was one of six South African women to attend the Bryn Mawr Summer Institute and also presented a paper there, promoting librarians and making valuable contacts. She is also an accredited EDT practitioner and her involvement with training is evidence of her commitment to the development of LIS professionals."
Congratulations must go to the runners-up. They were all very worthy candidates for the Award.

2nd place went to Joyce Myeza who was nominated by the KwaZulu-Natal Branch. She receives an award of R3000.

Joyce has been a member of LIASA and has served on the Branch Executive Committee since 1997 in various portfolios from additional member to PRO. During the 2000 annual LIASA conference she was part of the local organising committee. Joyce has been instrumental in setting up training for, facilitating and training of librarians in KZN in both urban and rural areas. She has also forged liaisons with other Library and Information organisations and this has benefited the greater KZN library community. Joyce has been responsible for organising SA Library Week celebrations in KZN and in 2005, won the KZN membership recruiter of the Year.

3rd place went to Tienie de Klerk of Gauteng North who receives an award of R2000.

Tienie is actively involved in the promotion and application of bibliographic standards in South Africa as Project Leader: BibSA (National Library of South Africa). She was appointed as convenor of the ISBN-13 Task Team to oversee the changeover from the 10- to 13-digit ISBN in South Africa. She is a founding member of the Interest Group for Bibliographic Standards, and is very much involved in continuing education and professional learning in her field.

All finalists who had been selected by their branches as Branch Librarian of the Year each received a trophy and a certificate of acknowledgement.

The other finalists were:

Mr Qondakele Sompondo, Eastern Cape
Ms Di Man, Gauteng South
Ms Rifiloe Motlhabane, North West
Fritz van Dyk, Northern Cape
Ronél Jacobs, Free State

Congratulations to you all!
