THEME: African Renaissance through Libraries
WHERE: Caesars Palace, Kempton Park

Hosted by the Gauteng South Branch

The fourth Annual Conference of the Library and Information Association of South Africa was held from 24 to 28 September 2001 at the Caesars Convention Centre in Kempton Park. Nearly 700 delegates (some from other African and overseas countries) attended the conference that was organised by LIASA Gauteng South branch.

The Conference theme was "African Renaissance through Libraries" and the reason given for this theme was that libraries are in a position to extend President Thabo Mbeki's vision in this regard. The papers delivered at the conference covered the following sub-themes:

  • Renaissance, reading, literacy and libraries
  • The impact of technology on the library environment
  • Africa's information technology renaissance
  • Information for liberation and empowerment
  • Balancing Third World realities with the information age
