Many of us woke this morning to the sad news of the passing of the Father of the Nation and the soul of South Africa, Nelson Mandela! The moment we have been anticipating for the last few months is now a reality and the sense of grief and loss is both personal and collective. We may claim him as ours but as President Obama said in his statement, "Mandela…belongs to the ages".
In mourning his passing, the greatest tribute we may grant Madiba is to make the conscious choice to create the South Africa he dreamt for all – "a democratic, non-sexist and people centred society free of hunger, poverty, disease and inequality" for which he chose to fight. Obama further said, "We will not likely see the likes of Nelson Mandela again. So it falls to us as best we can to forward the example that he set — to make decisions guided not by hate, but by love, to never discount the difference that one person can make, to strive for a future that is worthy of his sacrifice."
On behalf of the LIASA Representative Council, I extend our sincere and heartfelt condolences to Graca Machel and the Mandela family.
