Ms Laila Vahed

KwaZulu-Natal Branch Librarian of the Year  2016

It is with pleasure that I nominate Ms Laila Vahed for the LIASA Librarian of the Year Award for 2016 in recognition of her outstanding service to librarianship in South Africa.  Laila has long exemplified a commitment to hr profession that serves as an example to others.  After studying part-time and gaining her library qualifications to Masters level though the Universities of Durban-Westville and Natal, Laila was appointed Library Director at the University of Zululand.  There, with dogged determination, she has developed a small, rural, poorly funded academic library to a standard of which the staff and students be rightfully proud, with access to a wide variety of print and electronic information resources and pleasant study spaces.

her energies have not been confined to her own library.  She has served on numerous LIASA committees, has chaired and served on conference organising committees and has given unstintingly of her time and expertise to various projects.  During her tenure as Chair of the Board of Directors of the South Africa National Library and Information Consortium (SANLiC) the challenges and opportunities confronting the organisation have required sound and effective leadership and a considerable investment of her personal time.  Laila’s dedication is an inspiration to all.
