SABINET Online Awards presented at the LIASA Annual General Meeting

The LIASA/Sabinet Online Awards recognise and honour professional contributions and achievements of LIASA members. These Awards serve to enhance the sense of personal growth and accomplishments of LIASA members, provide other members with role models and simultaneously strengthen the image of our membership in the view of employers, leadership and the LIS community.

On 26 September, at the LIASA annual general meeting in Rustenburg, the winners of the LIASA/Sabinet Online Awards were announced:

Huibre Lombard, Deputy Library Director at the University of the Free State (UFS), was presented with the Academic Librarian of 2003 award. Sabinet Online is sponsoring an educational overseas trip to the value of R15,000.

Ms Lombard completed both her Honours and Masters degree though UNISA, cum laude. The title of her Masters degree is "The Role of the Library in a problem based Curriculum". Through her research she developed the Personal Information Management Programme (PIM), which was bought by institutions such as RAU and Technikon Free State and adapted to their use.

Other achievements:

  • The development of a 4-credit bearing course on Information Literacy which is now compulsory reading for students in the Faculty of Health Sciences, UFS.
  • The development of the University Library's first website.
  • Project leader for the Programme for Agricultural Information Service (PRAIS), which provides agricultural information to Africa.
  • As Branch Chairperson she has revitalized the Branch and statistics on membership renewals and recruitment bears testimony to her commitment to the Branch and to LIASA.
  • Member of the South African Online Group, the Health Information Community of SA and the SGB for Library and Information Studies.
  • Board member of FRELICO.
Annette Pienaar, Assistant City Librarian of Polokwane Municipal Libraries, is the Public and Community Librarian of 2003. Sabinet Online is sponsoring a local educational trip or attendance of a conference to the value of R2, 500.

Ms Pienaar has been employed at the Municipal Library since 1988, initially as a Librarian, later as a Senior Librarian and currently as Assistant City Librarian.

Achievements:

  • Member of the LIASA Limpopo Branch Executive Committee.
  • Responsible for experiential training at the Library and she mentors students. In addition, she also trains Library volunteers.
  • During Library week 2003 she organized two successful workshops on the use of library materials by learners. It is through her foresight and effort that the very successful Polokwane Book and Film Fair was hosted.
For the first time an award was also given to the Library Support Staff Employee of the Year. Jean Uys is a Senior Library Assistant at the University of Cape Town. Sabinet Online is sponsoring a local educational trip or attendance of a conference to the value of R2, 500.

Ms. Uys has completed the B. Technology while working and is scheduled to complete the B. Information Science shortly.

Achievements:
  • She contributes to LIASA nationally, regionally and within her own organization.
  • She was instrumental in establishing the Western Cape Support Staff Interest Group in 2000 and is currently its Chairperson.
  • She has pioneered activities such as the "Shelvers Workshop" and the panel discussion "MASITHETHE" - "Let us Speak".
  • At UCT Library she is a member of a Special Group tasked with providing feed-back and support on Employment Equity issues.
  • She currently represents the Support Staff sector on the SGB for Library and Information Studies and serves on the National Working Group for Information Organization and Storage.
Sabinet Online congratulated Huibre, Annette and Jean with these wonderful achievements. They are very worthy winners of their various categories.
