Communiqué from LIASA President
November 2008

It is now a month after the exciting conference in Cape Town. I hope you have all recovered and back at your desks with renewed strength and inspiration to make a difference in the lives of the communities we serve. Information is power. As library and information workers we are in a powerful position to assist in building an informed nation. The theme of our conference was about the future:" Looking ahead, the changing role of LIS". It was an opportunity to scan the LIS environment sector, evaluating our roles and services with the aim of ensuring our continued relevance.

The role of LIASA is equally critical. But who is LIASA? We are LIASA. Our role as an association also needs to be evaluated to ensure that it continues to be a voice for the profession. There are exciting developments within the sector and LIASA is right at the center continuing to represent the aspirations of its members. But LIASA needs each and every one of us to roll up the sleeves and continue to build on the firm foundation laid 10 years ago. LIASA has entered its second decade of existence. This is an opportunity to pause and evaluate our "fitness for purpose".

The new leadership which took office at the conference is aware of the pressure to come up with plans that will take LIASA to the next level of growth and stability. Hence the theme I chose for my term of office is: "Repositioning LIASA for growth and stability". The theme is supposed to keep me and my team focused in order to be able to deliver. As the new LIASA President, I am ready to put the first building block. I am going to be assisted by a group of loyal and committed members of LIASA who have been elected by you to serve on the Rep Council. I wish to thank them for availing themselves. I therefore invite you all to join us as we strive to continue to build our association. We need your support.

The strength of LIASA lies in our Branches and Interest Groups. I hope the new branch executive committees will continue to hold the torch of LIASA high. I wish to thank them for availing themselves to serve and wish them a fruitful year of service. I look forward to visiting all branches during my term of office to share your achievements and challenges. LIASA aims to serve you as members. One way of doing so is to build capacity within Branches. The CICD project funded generously by the Carnegie Cooperation of New York will enable LIASA to achieve this. The SABINET training grant will enable LIASA to add value.

I am aware that not everyone managed to come to the conference because others had to remain in our libraries to continue giving services. Thank you very much for those who kept the home fires burning.

It gives me great pleasure to introduce our 2008-2010 Representative Council members and thank them sincerely for availing themselves to serve LIASA. They are:
