Free State Provincial Library Services
South African Library Week is the most significant event on the Calendar of the Free State Provincial Library.
The theme Educate yourself @ your library inspired us to come up with the idea of a graduation cap as logo for our programme: adults and children will take part in activities which will assist them to “educate themselves @ their library”. Each participant in the programme receives a “graduation cap sticker” to wear during the week and at the end of the programme, a graduation certificate, complete with a red ribbon around it.
The programme
The library week programme is built around the theme Educate yourself @ your library. More emphasis was placed on the adult progrmme this year – we felt that this group is easily neglected because it is quite a task to produce a programme that will interest the adult segment of the library.
Lots of time, money and effort went into the planning, procurement of the materials, the packing and distribution of packages – one package for each of the 171 public library and depots were made and delivered – from Allanridge to Zastron! We hope to reach a total of 10 200 community members through this programme.
It was ROUGH to complete all the parcels in time and it took teamwork!
We have 171 public libraries and depots in 5 different districts.
Staff of the Free State Provincial Library Services worked non-stop for 2 weeks to prepare parcels for 171 public libraries and depots in the Free State Province.
From left to right: Gloria Mbhele (Collection Management Division), Dimakatso Matsoso (Development Services Division) and Lydia Molahloe (Collection Management Division)
ADULT PROGRAMME
Thirty adults per library have the opportunity to take part in five activities, empowering them to learn how to educate themselves through the library. Stickers are pasted on a specially designed attendance chart for each participant. “Smiley stickers” indicate the progress of each person. “Bonus stickers” can be earned by those who put in an extra effort. Each library can enroll the one Attendance Chart with the most bonus stickers on it for a competition. This is to motivate adults to give their best during the week. Activities include: building a 48 piece puzzle of a world map in mess than 20 minutes, mental acrobatics during which new words and definitions are learned and a memory game that jogs the minds, as well as two activities in which education is received in the participant’s general attitude towards life and an in-depth identification of strengths and weaknesses within the self. It is hoped that adults will enjoy this programme to such an extent that they would WANT to return to the library to Educate themselves.
CHILDREN’S PROGRAMME
Children can look forward to 6 interesting activities. The librarian is sensitized not to “educate”, but rather be a FUNBRARIAN whilst presenting the activities. Children can take part in activities such as:
Grades R, 1 & 2 - Learning the alphabet through face-painting.
Grades 3 – 5 – Spell Check: FUNBRARIAN can spell, can you?
Grades 3 – 7 – Eager to learn new words!
Everybody! – Making a number worm
Grades 6 – 8 – Paper weaving
Grades 6 – 8 Learn the art of origami.
COMPETITIONS
The paper weaving and origami activities are competitions in which the creativity and originality of children will be the determining factors.
