Carnegie Library Leadership Project (CLLP)

Background

The Library and Information Association of South Africa (LIASA) was awarded a 3-year grant of $499 500.00 for Continuing Education and Professional Development (CEPD) which aims to address the workplace skills development of LIS workers. This grant followed the successful South African Library Leadership Project (SALLP) which was funded by the Andrew Mellon Foundation. The second goal of the SALLP was to locate a CEPD entity within LIASA which is being addressed by this Carnegie grant. The CCNY was extremely impressed with the content and outcomes of the SALLP and recommended this training for the 2004 Carnegie grantees. Hence the third goal of the Carnegie LIASA CEPD grant is:

"Leadership training and development of personnel from Carnegie model libraries in South Africa, at the Mortenson Center for International Library Programs, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, USA."

This will be accomplished by identifying and selecting personnel from the Carnegie model libraries in South Africa, to participate in an eight-week leadership development and training programme at the Mortenson Center for International Library Programs, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, USA.

Key personnel involved within the Carnegie funded projects may be identified for leadership development, further skills enhancement, professional exchange and mentorship, etc based on a needs assessment in keeping with the Institution needs and the vision of the Carnegie Corporation. This training opportunity will be undertaken initially at the Mortenson Center for International Library Programs, University of Illinois, who is an official partner with LIASA. Subsequent programmes may be designed to be held in South Africa thereby drawing on the national pool of participants within the Mortenson Center leadership training programmes. The 2005 participants will join this pool of associates. The success of the South African Library Leadership Project (SALLP) is evidence of this working partnership. This project highlighted the need for LIS leadership development in South Africa, as well as exposing young and dynamic professionals to international librarianship.

Barbara Ford, Director: Mortenson Center and Susan Schnuer: Assistant Director have agreed to design a training programme that will be relevant to the needs of the Carnegie participants. The CICD will facilitate the South African segment viz. selection, orientation and travel arrangements, and the Mortenson Center will handle the logistics of the US segment. As part of the 8-week Fall Training Program, to be held in Sept-Nov 2005, the programme will include library management, change management, fund raising, effective meeting skills, managing technology in libraries, refining of IT skills, mentorship, advocacy, etc. The advantage of this programme is the exposure of local LIS professionals to international trends and current LIS best practices, as well as interacting with librarians from other countries who will be attending this training programme. It enables practitioners to acquire a global perspective on their particular career choice/s.
