Background Collaborations Carnegie Library Leadership Project CLLP Participants Photos Reports

CLLP Participants

The 3rd goal of the LIASA-Carnegie Project is to facilitate the participation of Carnegie grantees within an 8-week Leadership Training Programme at the Mortenson Center for International Library Programs, University of Illinois. As recipients of major grants from the Carnegie Corporation of New York, the City of Cape Town Library and the Msunduzi Municipal Library in partnership with the KwaZulu Natal Provincial Library Services have selected key members of staff to participate herein from 07 September to 05 November 2005. The selected participants are:

  • Kathleen Laishley - Acting Principal Librarian (City of Cape Town Central Library) -

  • Mandla Ntombela - Principal Librarian (Msunduzi Municipal Library) -

  • Alecia Steenkamp - Regional Librarian (KZN Provincial Library & Information Services) -
An orientation programme was held in Pretoria on July 05, 2005 with the three participants and Ms Susan Schnuer, Assistant Director, Mortenson Center for International Library Programs. A pre-departure project was identified, which required participants to address the following;
  1. As a manager in a changing environment, what would you identify as critical areas of need to move your organisation forward? Please list in order of priority and elaborate your rationale.

  2. Identify the purpose of promotional material in a library setting. Review the current material of your institution - What message does your material convey? Does your promotional material meet the purpose? If not, what would you do?
Participants would then be able to observe trends pertinent and relevant to their work needs and scenarios.

As a partnership initiative between the KZN Provincial Library Services and Msunduzi Municipal Library (formerly the Natal Society Library), a state-of-the-art children's library is being built and developed. The Carnegie grant supports the resources and collection development of this library.

The City of Cape Town is also in a partnership with the City of Cape Town Library Services to relocate the Central Library to its own building which will be the refurbished former Drill Hall. The Carnegie grant also supports the resource and collection development thereby ensuring a modern library with a collection that complements it.
