Job Purpose

To provide effective professional circulation and client services in a client-orientated environment within the CPUT Libraries including, Saturday and after-hours work when needed.


Job Knowledge, Skills and Experience


Minimum Requirements

A Senior Certificate or equivalent

At least two (2) years’ relevant experience in a Higher Education Library environment or research environment and

Studying towards an LIS qualification


A three-year Library qualification with no experience necessary


Recommendations:  Experience in circulation and user services at a small branch.


Key Performance Areas / Principal Accountabilities

All tasks in any aspect of service support and administration at the Library Assistant level, as may be required from time to time in the work locations that require it.

Client support/Customer services, Circulation and administrative functions, Service point duties (Query handling), Clerical and admin duties in any section of the Library, Shelving and shelf reading, Data and statistics capturing, Record keeping and filling, Team/departmental support, Inter Library loans and inter branch support, Relieving in other departments and branch libraries, Participating in the shift system, including after hours and on Saturdays, Health and safety Physical movement of books, furniture and other library equipment and material



Strong customer focus, Good communication and interpersonal skills, Accuracy

Computer literacy, Good administrative and problem solving skills, Good time management skills, Adaptability, Ability to follow written and verbal instruction, Ability to perform continuous physical work

Ability to work independently as well as within a team
