The 4IR is defined by the blurring lines of digital, physical and biological worlds. While some warn that robots will steal our jobs – specifically those tasks of repetitive nature, it becomes clear that our future world of work will be of a highly automated nature. A prerequisite to have jobs in such automated workplaces, is to master the right set of digital skills for improved work performance. No longer are information centers/libraries closed societies working in silo’s. Workplaces increasingly demand a holistic approach, where our well suited information management and organisation mechanisms provide possibilities and opportunities to contribute to the wider world of information. To prepare best for the changes in the forthcoming changed job market, we – as professional metadata specialists - need to keep learning how to apply our analytical and creative human skills to utilise the digital world to our advantage, or face irrelevance.
