ABOUT

SA Librarians’ Day was established in 2014 to celebrate the launch of LIASA on 10 July 1997. It aims:

  • To create awareness about the importance of Librarianship as a profession and the critical role of Library and Information workers in nation building.
  • To recognise and celebrate a milestone in the profession, aimed at raising the status of Library and Information workers, when LIASA was registered as a Professional Body in February 2015.

THE ROLL OF HONOUR

South African Librarians’ Day on 10 July 2021 will celebrate the legacy of the late Clare M. Walker, librarian extraordinaire.

At her memorial service, hosted by LIASA on 2 June 2021, Ellen Tise, former LIASA and IFLA President, in paying tribute to Clare said: “I believe that if there was a gene for librarianship, then it would have been found in Clare’s DNA… everything she stood for was to enhance the profession, the services rendered and to have a positive effect on the communities we serve.” Clare was a committed, dedicated and loyal professional who contributed immensely to the birth of LIASA and remained active and engaged in the Association to her last day.

LIASA would like to recognise/acknowledge/applaud ALL its members who have the “librarianship gene” and who made a contribution to enhancing our profession through keeping LIASA active and engaged, and their library services operating, during the various lockdown levels of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Are you the LIASA member who, like Clare -

  • loyally renewed your membership and participated whenever you could in the various LIASA virtual events and webinars?
  • remained active and committed in the various LIASA Structures despite the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic?
  • actively engaged in organising and presenting webinars and seminars on LIASA platforms?
  • continued to submit articles for the LIASA publications?
  • continued to invest in your own professional development and that of your colleagues even while working from home?
  • assisted others with their reading and literacy programmes?
  • continued promoting your library services whenever, however and wherever possible?

There are myriads of examples of members who have shown during trying times and despite many challenges, that Libraries Matter! and that they have the librarianship DNA. Tell us your story to appear in our Roll of Honour social media campaign.
