Workshop 1:

Finding your roots

This workshop will delve into the tools available for genealogical research and how to use them (not just the online sites, but also the content sitting in official archives and in our own libraries). It will guide the delegate in interpreting genealogical resources and understanding the issues involved in genealogical research. Delegates will getting started with a family tree and explore the digitization of historical documents for effective information retrieval on family historical roots.


Workshop 2:

Developing collections – from the basics to the budget

With the spotlight on library collections, it is imperative to ensure correct collections for the community you serve. This workshop wil touch on, amongst other, what to consider when developing collections, managing budgets and budget allocations, selection criteria and evaluation of collections.


Workshop 3:

Mobile Literacy: the use of mobile phones to promote literacy in your library

Mobile (cell) phones are the preferred way of communication for many people. This workshop will explore how mobile devices creates an environment in which librarians can access early reading materials, and how digitised and open access materials can be accessed via mobile devices. Workshop delegates will become more familiar with the challenges associated with using mobile devices to access and use reading and information sources on their phones.


Workshop 4:

Connecting Public Librarian's social responsibilities with LIS curriculum and a need for formalised Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

As community demands for development grows, the role of public libraries is changing. The potential to evolve into places that can foster greater social cohesion is very real. This requires building relations with communities and collaborations for integrated programmes with other service providers such as educators, social and health workers, and other agencies that promote social development. So, what does this mean for public libraries and librarians? What are the implications to being community-driven libraries and librarians? What are the competencies required to embrace this new role and to make it a reality?
This workshop will initiate the conversation between public librarians and academics to put into perspective the demands and realities of practice versus the relevance of the LIS curriculum. As CPD is an effective platform to broaden knowledge and enhance competencies, this workshop will also focus on how library schools could explore CPD programs as a formal means to broadening understanding of development theory, public librarianship and the role of the public library?
