Choosing a name with Dr Hester Marais After the informative and insightful talk on NACO and identity management by Dr Hester Marais in June, IGBIS is very pleased to announce that Dr Marais is returning to present another session on an extremely important facet of descriptive metadata creation. On Tuesday 15 August Dr Marais will discuss how to go about choosing and creating a name. A unique form of a name differentiates people sharing the same name and brings together the works of a person who has used different forms of a name. Creating and applying a unique name benefits users of online library catalogues and digital repositories. This session will cover Resource Description and Access (RDA) principles and instructions for determining forms of personal names and how to distinguish between people sharing the same name. Dr Marais has extensive experience and knowledge in bibliographic description and authority control. She conducts accredited Name Authority Cooperative Programme (NACO) training sessions for South African cataloguers across the country and presents papers at conferences and seminars regionally and internationally. This session will be invaluable not only for cataloguers and metadata practitioners working with names, but for anyone wishing to familiarise themselves with the how’s and why’s surrounding names in a bibliographic record.
