Shaping the Future of Bibliographic Standards: An IGBIS CoP Webinar

IGBIS CoP invites you to an engaging webinar where we will discuss key updates and celebrate excellence in metadata and bibliographic standards.

What’s on the agenda?

1. Introduction of the Interim IGBIS Committee – Get introduced to the team leading the bibliographic standards CoP.
2. Cataloguing Ethics Task Team (CETT) Report – Get insights into the latest developments and their impact on cataloguing.

The discussion on cataloguing ethics began in the 2022 IGBIS webinar featuring Dr. Deborah Lee (Senior Teaching Fellow, University College London), where she explored ethical considerations in descriptive cataloguing, subject headings, and classification systems such as LCSH and DDC.

Following this, the Cataloguing Code of Ethics Task Team was established to examine ethical metadata practices in South Africa, conducting a national survey to assess current perspectives. This session will present key findings from the CETT Report and discuss their implications for SA cataloguers and metadata specialists.

3. Presentation by IGBIS Award Recipient: Martha Mamphoke

Martha Mamphoke is a seasoned South African librarian and metadata specialist. She serves as a Metadata and Cataloguing Librarian at the National Library of South Africa, where she plays a key role in organising bibliographic data. A recognized trainer in Resource Description and Access (RDA). Her interest lies in BIBFRAME and Linked Data for the modernisation of cataloguing systems.

She has contributed to the IGBIS cataloguing ethics task team and served on the Editorial Committee for Scanul-ecs (2022-2023). Holding a Bachelor of Information Science Honours from UNISA, she recently completed her master's in informatics and information systems. Her excellence in cataloguing and metadata earned her the inaugural IGBIS Award in 2024
