Join the IGBIS Community of Practice for an engaging webinar as we explore how BIBFRAME 2.0 is transforming bibliographic data for the digital era, featuring our very own Chair-elect, Tholakele Xulu, as the guest speaker.

As library data evolves into the Linked Data era, MARC is no longer equipped to meet the demands of digital and complex collections. Enter BIBFRAME 2.0, a modern bibliographic framework designed to replace MARC by leveraging Linked Data principles and separating physical and intellectual aspects of resources.

In this session, Ms Xulu will guide us through the structure, benefits, and real-world application of BIBFRAME 2.0, with a focus on its role in converting MARC 21 data into flexible, web-friendly formats. Learn how BIBFRAME empowers cataloguers to describe resources more dynamically, especially complex formats like audiovisuals, serials and rare materials.

Tholakele Xulu is a Metadata Specialist at the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC), where she manages and organizes information resources across formats and creates metadata for digital archival collections within the eRKC. She holds academic qualifications from Durban University of Technology (formerly ML Sultan) and the University of South Africa (UNISA). Her professional experience spans institutions such as the Mangosuthu University of Technology, CSIR, NHLS, and the South African Parliament. She served on the IGBIS-KZN committee during its formation and is known for her expertise in cataloguing, metadata standards and authority control. A recognized leader in the field, she contributed to national training initiatives on RDA and MARC21 and played a key role in the RDA-SA Steering Committee. Ms Xulu is affiliated with LIASA, IGBIS, the Library of Congress NACO Program, and the PCC. She has contributed significantly to professional literature and forums, sharing her insights on metadata quality, cataloguing standards and evolving roles in the library sector.
